Mike Conti says: „Getting a new roof put on your house or building is one of the most important and stressful things you have to do as a homeowner. I say stressful because as many people discover, unless you can handle the job yourself you’ll have to hire someone, and finding someone who is dependable, reputable, and good at this particular craft can be very difficult.
A few years ago I bought a nearly 200 year old property with a large house, connected ell and barn, and have been working on it since. Just before I bought the place the previous owners hired another company to put a new roof on the house, and the job that was done was very disappointing. Since I had no say in this I have had to live with the poor decision in hiring and the poor execution of the job.
So when I was ready to have the roofs on the large ell and barn done, I did a lot of research into the various companies available in my area.
Luckily for me, I found James & Whitney online. Gotta admit, while reading the many rave reviews about the company, I had my doubts they were all legitimate. Seemed too good to be true. But here I am, several months later, after they completed my job, and I’m writing one myself.
From the very first call to the company I was impressed. They were very responsive, friendly, and competent. Jeromy drove quite a ways to give me an onsite evaluation as the company is based in Maine but expanding into New Hampshire. He was outstanding and very thorough. The estimate/quote I received a short time later was lengthy and concise. We even included the demolition of a deteriorating and unused chimney on the ell as part of the job, which took another worry off my mind. To top it off, he also gave my next door neighbor a quote on his house and ell, and said we’d get a discount if we did both jobs on the same day, which we ended up doing. My neighbor got the same type of quote as I and was also very impressed.
After making our selections for materials, we then waited out the rotten winter until April when both jobs were to be done.
Two days before the job start the materials were delivered to the site. Delivery was very professional and the materials were all bundled and stacked together, separated for each job.
One day before the job start the dumpsters were delivered, again very professionally. They work with The Can Man out of Lebanon, ME and they were great, friendly and professional and the dumpsters looked new because they were.
Day of the job went off like a military operation. I grew up in the trades and know what I’m looking at when people do this type of work. They brought in a great crew, large enough, motivated enough and experienced enough to pull off two large jobs at the same time. In effect they stripped, repaired and reshingled FOUR roofs in one day—including taking my chimney down below the roof line and buttoning it up — and when they left everything looked outstanding plus they cleaned up so well they left no trace of the work except the full dumpsters and some excess materials that were both picked up a few days later. Even Jeromy showed up to touch base and be onsite for the job start, something that surprised me and was appreciated.
The onsite project manager was a young but experienced carpenter named Shayne and Shayne was also outstanding. Not content merely to supervise, Shayne executed a lot of the more precise and difficult parts of the install himself, finessing the valley work and replacing some rotted wood on the barn. Shayne also put up two ladders and improvised some sheathing specifically to protect two antique carriage lamps mounted on the barn from any possible falling debris. The attention to detail was greatly appreciated.
The crew was outstanding and worked arduously from about 8am until after 6pm, stopping only for lunch. They were all business, no smoking, no fooling around, though they did appear to be happy in their work and in working with each other.
All in all an outstanding experience, and I cannot recommend the fine folks at James & Whitney enough.
Very best regards
